The production and distribution company started its journey into the world of movies in 2012. There’s so much this studio has delivered. From dramas, comedies, to even documentaries, there have been classic titles making their permanent position in the lives of film goers. Horror, however, has always been its strongest suit.
There’s this thing about the horror films from A24 that separates them into the niche. There’s an indie touch to these movies. Some faces you see are familiar, others aren’t. The best part? Instead of going for massive budgets, folks at A24 treat movies like art. Each movie produced under the wings of A24 offers something unique, which leaves an impression.
And their ability to recognize the talent is mindblowing. I mean, look at Anya Taylor-Joy. Casting her in The Witch introduced Hollywood to a grander talent, leaving a sharp impact on the horror niche.
And the history of working with directors has been golden, too, given how Ari Aster and Robert Eggers, in a way, have become regulars.
Anyway, I am sure you’re not here for the backstory of the studio. So, without further ado, I am ranking 8 titles that I love from the whole collection of A24’s horror films.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Packed with a top-notch cast, The Killing of a Sacred Deer was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things, The Lobster, Dogtooth). It’s a psychological thriller that remains with you for a long time.
The plot focuses on a renowned surgeon, Dr. Steven Murphy (Farrell), who takes a peculiar teenage boy, Martin (Keoghan), under his wing. The film descends into a chilling and unnerving narrative as Martin’s ominous intentions are revealed, forcing Steven to make an unthinkable choice.
As for the title, it comes from the Greek myths of King Agamemnon and Artemis, where the king had to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, after accidentally killing a sacred deer.
I liked the movie; it had a great story, as well as great cinematography. But A24 has delivered better options. To put it simply, it’s not a movie I would watch twice, hence it remains at 8th among my favorite A24 horror movies of all time.

Heretic
Release Year: 2024

While the horror in Heretic was more had more of a psychological side, it’s still a debate open to different perspectives. But it definitely hinted at some divine interventions. The movie is more like a satire, putting religions in question using heavy dialogue, great acting, and a plot that is unpredictable. I enjoyed every second of it. And Hugh Grant, man, his conversations with Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East are very scary yet profound at the same time.
It’s a movie that opens up doors in your mind that you might have kept closed until now. It asks questions that most people wouldn’t dare to ask. And in all those attempts, it delivers a masterpiece.
My only complaint? I wish instead of focusing on perspectives, it could go towards a little supernatural side. I was so ready to see religions in the play. But I guess that was the whole point, to leave things in perspective.
Remember, while you’re watching this A24 horror film, focus on the conversations happening. That’s how a movie like this is supposed to be enjoyed.
The Witch

This is the film that introduced Anya Taylor-Joy to the big world of Hollywood. The plot follows an orthodox Christian family living near the woods after leaving their village. One day, strange things start happening once their newborn son goes missing. Soon, one after another, family members start losing their sanity.
The film’s commitment to historical accuracy, including the archaic dialect, creates a truly authentic and foreboding atmosphere. It’s a slow-burn horror that relies on suggestion and mounting dread rather than cheap jump scares.
If you ask me, I have been very obsessed with the concepts of folk tales, Satan, and movies that show the pieces of Hell (yeah, the literal one!). Therefore, this easily became one of my favorite A24 scary movies.

Midsommar

Ari Aster is a name that diehard fans of horror movies prefer trusting blindly. Anything he creates is often well-received by fans. Midsommar is the evidence of it. Starring Florence Pugh, Midsommar follows a folktale that doesn’t wait for the night sky to unfold itself.
The story follows a group of American students traveling to a remote Swedish village to attend a midsummer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into a bizarre and violent competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
Florence Pugh is playing the role of Dani, and her portrayal of a grieving character will haunt you long after you are done with the movie. But you should also watch it for the beauty of its frame. The film’s vibrant and colorful cinematography stands in stark contrast to the gruesome events that unfold, making for a uniquely disturbing viewing experience.
This weird combo of beautiful cinematography and dark folk-horror easily establishes Midsommar among one of the best A24 scary films of all time.

Hereditary

Another Ari Aster movie, Hereditary, has one of the most disturbing deaths of a child character I have seen until now. I felt disturbed when I watched When Evil Lurks, a Spanish movie directed by Demián Rugna, which also featured a sensitive scene featuring a spirit killing children. Hereditary gives that movie a good competition. And it’s not the gore I am talking about. It’s the way raw horror has been presented using supernatural elements that’s praiseworthy, yet creepy. (I am a little getting anxious thinking of the scene!)
Anyway, Hereditary is the story of a family of four. The story centers on the Graham family, who are grieving the loss of their secretive grandmother. Things go haywire from there when a spirit starts haunting the surviving members.
Hereditary is more than just a horror movie; it’s a deeply disturbing family tragedy that will haunt you for days. It is, in my opinion, the absolute best A24 horror film and a benchmark for the genre in the 21st century.
Talk To Me

The Lighthouse

The film follows two siblings who, after the death of their father, are placed in a foster home with an eccentric woman who has sinister intentions. Sally Hawkins delivers an unhinged and terrifying performance that will have you on the edge of your seat.
The film is a slow-burn that masterfully builds an atmosphere of dread before culminating in a truly shocking and visceral climax. It’s a powerful and unsettling exploration of grief and trauma that solidifies its place as one of the best A24 horror movies to date. And I am not exaggerating at all. It definitely tops my list.
