With The Franchise Trailer, HBO is back with another witty, biting satire, and this time the target is Hollywood’s big-budget superhero franchises. From Veep creator Armando Iannucci, the upcoming comedy series The Franchise promises to deliver an inside look at the chaotic and often ridiculous world behind the scenes of blockbuster filmmaking.
HBO’s Franchise Trailer gives us a sneak peek into a universe where over-the-top egos, Method actors, and superhero stars on HGH take center stage. The show focuses on the crew of an unloved superhero franchise as they battle for relevance in the ruthless world of cinematic universes.
As the official synopsis puts it, the series “shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f***-up has an origin story.”
First Look: Watch The Franchise Trailer Here
As The Franchise Trailer releases, HBO fans get their first taste of what’s sure to be a hilarious and cutting exploration of the filmmaking process. Moreover, The trailer mocks everything from Method acting to the absurdity of big studio franchises. The show features an all-star ensemble cast, including Aya Cash, Himesh Patel, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, and Isaac Powell, with Richard E. Grant and Daniel Brühl in recurring roles.
Billy Magnussen, one of the show’s stars, shared with IndieWire how much fun the cast had behind the scenes.
“The gift was, I got to laugh at all this shit we do,” Magnussen said, referring to the outlandishness of the superhero genre. “It’s a TV show about making a superhero movie, and it’s all just a bunch of morons running the show, and you get to laugh.”
He also emphasized the importance of the ensemble cast, stating,
“The ensemble was everything. The community I worked with during that TV show was a gift that I couldn’t be more grateful for. It’s all about people, because a lot of this industry takes itself too seriously, and this show reminds me that you can have fun and laugh at yourself.”
From Veep to The Franchise: Armando Iannucci’s Next Big Hit
Armando Iannucci, who previously skewered the political world with the critically acclaimed Veep, is taking his satirical talents to Hollywood in this latest venture. Teaming up with executive producer Sam Mendes, who also directs the pilot, Iannucci brings his signature sharp wit to the often inflated egos and behind-the-scenes chaos of superhero blockbusters. The series is produced by Dundee Productions in collaboration with Neal Street Productions, with Jon Brown serving as the showrunner.
The Franchise release date is set for October 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and will also be available to stream on Max. So mark your calendars, because this is one superhero series that’s going to leave you laughing at the absurdity of it all.
