Netflix Cancels That ’90s Show: What Went Wrong?

The nostalgia train has come to a halt as Netflix officially cancels That ’90s Show after just two seasons. The series, which served as a sequel to the beloved That ’70s Show, won’t be returning for a third round. This report is verified by Kurtwood Smith—best known for his role as the cantankerous Red Forman.

Smith shared the disappointing news with fans via Instagram, writing

That ‘90s Show, which premiered in 2023, brought back some of the original cast members. To name a few from That ’70s Show, including Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, Wilmer Valderrama, and Mila Kunis. Moreover, the show focused on Eric and Donna’s daughter Leia, played by Callie Haverda. It focuses on as she spends the summer with her grandparents, Red and Kitty Forman (played by Smith and Debra Jo Rupp), in Point Place, Wisconsin.

The show was initially met with excitement, with Rolling Stone‘s Alan Sepinwall praising Smith and Rupp’s performances, noting, “Their comedic chemistry remains as strong as ever.” The first season was divided into two parts, with 10 episodes making up “Part 1,”. The second season expanded to 16 episodes split into “Part 2” and “Part 3.”

Though Netflix has decided not to continue the series, Smith’s comments suggest the team isn’t ready to call it quits just yet. Whether another network or streaming service picks up That ’90s Show remains to be seen. But for now, fans can only hope this isn’t the end of the Forman family’s return to the small screen.

The 90s show canceled after two seasons might be a blow to those who grew up loving the original series. But it’s clear the cast and crew aren’t giving up hope just yet.
