Nintendo of America put out the Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer this morning. It’s the first look at the sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the one that blew up in 2023. The new film hits theaters on April 3, 2026, through Universal Pictures and Illumination.
The opening shot is strange. Bowser, but smaller than normal, is sitting inside a little stone castle. He’s painting a portrait of Mario. There’s candlelight, no music at first, and it just hangs there for a beat. Then the camera slides back, and you see Mario and Luigi standing outside the tiny model, same size as always, watching him work. It’s funny and weird in the best way.
The trailer then cuts through flashes of new settings and familiar faces. Chris Pratt is back as Mario. Anya Taylor-Joy voices Peach again. Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson all return. New names this time are Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct from a Matthew Fogel script. Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto produce. It’s a Nintendo and Universal co-finance.
The first film did $1.36 billion worldwide, ranking as the third-highest animated movie ever. This one looks bigger, at least from the quick shots in the trailer—floating worlds, bits of stardust, Peach on what looks like a starship bridge, and a short look at Rosalina’s observatory.
Fans have already pushed #SuperMarioGalaxyMovie up the trending lists. Most are calling the opening scene “oddly wholesome.”
