Here’s a List of Halloween Movies You Need This Year

The Medium

Get out of your comfort zone and go beyond English, you will find gems that are synonyms of nightmares. The Medium is one of them. Known as one of the best Thai horror movies, The Medium is a documentary-styled movie following a Shaman (Medium). She can communicate with ghosts and help her tribe members. But things go haywire when instead of one ghost, there come many! Or maybe, something else- that’s the twist you need to figure out yourself.

Dabbe: Curse of the Jinn

One of the scariest and most disturbing Turkish horror movies I came across, Dabe: Curse of the Jinn is a great Halloween to keep around. The movie starts with Ebru (Irmak Örnek) meeting a local Shaman famous for chasing ghosts away.

She is a psychology researcher and doesn’t believe in ghosts. Coincidently, her childhood friend Kubra gets possessed by a Jinn and kills her husband before their wedding. This unfolds a dramatic sequence of events leading to a setup that will shake your soul.

Terrified (Aterrados)

A Spanish movie from Argentina, Terrified is a low-budget horror movie that decently serves the element. It’s been a while since I watched it but it was great compared to the disappointing series of horror movies we are getting in the English cinema. The setup is in Buenos Aires where some spooky incidents lead to a doctor, her colleague, and an ex-cop teaming up. Things that unfold beyond are worth watching.

When Evil Lurks

Recently watched it. I have to warn you, if you are anything like me, do not eat while watching this movie. I found some scenes disgusting but the movie was so good that I couldn’t stop. When Evil Lurks stands among one of the best Halloween movies from Argentina. It’s in Spanish so you might need subtitles. But the actors have done a great job justifying a great script while delivering the disturbance in its raw form with no filters at all.

Under the Shadow

Babak Anvari wrote and directed this masterpiece which became a cult classic for lovers of horror movies. The storyline follows a mother and daughter trying to survive the post-revolution war-torn Tehran in the 1980s. To make things worse, an evil Jinn starts haunting them. At some point, I found the Jinn’s appearance scary as hell. And mixed with the elements of sadness and helplessness, the movie delivers a perfection of the horror world.

The Ritual

Four college friends decide to explore the wilderness of Sweden. But things do not go as they had planned when they come across a creature hunting them. During their journey that soon turned into a survival saga, they faced a cult that was as deadly as their looks. There is much to look forward to, some you might have guessed, some you might have not. So let it be your Halloween flick this year.

The Witch

I won’t say The Witch is spooky, but it definitely is disturbing and interesting. Directed by Robert Eggers, the movie is set in New England in the 17th century. The story follows a banished Puritan family of four kids and the parents that set up their little home and farm outside a village near a jungle. The jungle is possessed by witches that start lurking around these folks.

Things get disturbing with the involvement of powers that are often only heard in mythologies and lores. If you are not familiar with Robert Eggers’s work, it might be the beginning of you turning into this fan. His next Nosferatu movie has become highly anticipated due to titles such as The Witch.

Verónica

Veronica plays with the Ouija board and gets possessed. The Spanish horror movie claims to be based on a true story multiplying the overall spooky charisma of the tale. As for the ratings, those are great. As for my experience, I loved it, great storyline, great acting, definitely entertaining. But I have watched too many Halloween movies. So it wasn’t very unique for me, but definitely very interesting.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

What’s better than evil spirits and an asylum? Exploring it through found footage films. Gonjiam does that. A group of YouTubers goes into a haunted asylum to explore for a horror web series. In return, they get to explore more than they could chew. I am not much of a believer in ghosts. But this movie was nightmarish. Had to keep lights on for a few days (I live alone bro!).

Well, that’s all for now. There are too many movies in my head, but if I keep going, you will too many options making you more confused. So try one of these. Meanwhile, I will keep posting new titles in my complete list of the best Horror movies. Also, sign up, that way you will get every new detail delivered to your mailbox.

Happy Halloween!
