When in 2013 you grabbed your controller and invaded the world of GTA 5, could you imagine someone had another plan with it? Not all that rash driving, letting your monsters come out. Or even following traffic rules in the chaotic world- but something more creative? Well, a duo genius of Sam Crane and Pinny Grylls directed the Grand Theft Auto Documentary entirely using in-game footage of Rockstar’s GTA 5 game.
The SXSW has already been picked by MUBI and is going to hit both, the streaming platform and theatres super soon.
Grand Theft Auto Hamlet Plot is Poetic and Chaotic
The plot follows the story of a duo of struggling actors who plan to stage the entirety of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The 89-minute mind-bending film is set up in The UK during its third COVID lockdown. Critics’ reviews from SXSW are filled with praises for the Grand Theft Auto Hamlet.
While we’re all still (im)patiently waiting for GTA 6, Grand Theft Auto Hamlet is the creative relief we didn’t know we needed. It’s the perfect distraction for fans like you and me. It’s something to hold us over while we wait for the next chapter in the GTA saga.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie is expected to hit its UK premiere on October 15 at the BFI London Film Festival. Post which, it will make its way to BFI Imax on Oct. 20.
As for MUBI, the platform is targeting a 2025 release with more details yet to be revealed.

MUBI is lining up with some great titles as it is expanding its partnerships. This one specifically, was financed by BFI Doc Society, Park Pictures, Altitude, and Spark Feature. Well, the GTA 6 release date is set for somewhere in Autumn 2025, so there’s a long gap. Meanwhile you and I have hopes like these to keep us connected with the GTA universe and a little busy.
