Cillian Murphy in Small Things Like These trailer with a solemn expression.

Cillian Murphy’s Small Things Like These Trailer Hits Screens

Cillian Murphy’s Small Things Like These trailer was released today, September 17, and it’s already stirring up emotions. The short movie is based on the novel of the same name written by Claire Keegan and has Emily Watson, Michelle Fairley, and Eileen Walsh alongside Cillian as cast members.

As for the production team, popularly known for directing Peaky Blinders Season Three, Tim Mielants has taken charge of direction here too. Cinematically, the trailer feels like it has his touch in shots and the music selection. Everything is contributing to setting up the movie for great Critics’ reviews once it’s released.

What We Know From the Small Things Like These Trailer

If you haven’t read the book already, the story is of a father (Cillian as Bill, a coal merchant) unraveling the dark secrets of a local convent. There’s so much pain, guilt, and dark secrets lurking around set up in a small cold Irish town called New Ross, Circa 1985.

According to a Vanity Fair report, the inspiration for the incidents in the plot is taken from the real-life Magdalene Laundries. The heinous series of events happened with women who were unmarried but pregnant. Catholic Nuns of the convent used to isolate them until 1996 when the ritual finally came to a halt.

These incidents are impacting Bill deeply not only for the future of his daughters but also because of the memories of his mother.

Cillian Murphy’s Small Things Like These Trailer Shows Bill’s Emotional Fight

What makes Cillian Murphy’s Small Things Like These Trailer even more impactful is the vulnerability Murphy portrays. Bill’s struggle to express his emotions is as much a battle as the secrets he uncovers, and director Tim Mielants, who also helmed Peaky Blinders Season 3, brings out this beautifully raw emotion in every shot. According to Vanity Fair, Mielants captures the “beautiful volcano of emotions” Murphy brings to the screen.

After Oppenheimer, Small Things Like These is Cillian’s Cinematic Entry

Notably, Cillian took almost a six-month-long break after he got done with the shooting of Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Once he was done, Mielants and him started working on this project. While Mielants and Murphy have been known to each other for a long time, they have a profound respect for each others’ work.
