Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies in 2024: It’s Time to Deactivate Cryosleep Chambers!

Rejoice homies, 2024 is the year when we can get excited for upcoming sci-fi movies! 🎉🎉🎦

The world of sci-fi movies is looking to extend its catalog in the second half of this year with some great releases still left to come. From mind-bending journeys across the cosmos 🌌 to daring deep-sea 🌊 adventures, the lineup promises a whirlwind of emotions. With these new releases, get ready to be thrilled, moved, and maybe even a little meh-mified!

For now, let me take you through the movies that are keeping me on my toes. Let’s check out the plot, cast members, and a little bit of behind-the-scenes!

Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies in 2024

Transformers One

Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry

Honestly, I miss Michael Bay’s Era of Transformers until Dark of The Moon. Post that, what we got was nothing less than a disappointment. Even the last Movie Transformers: The Last Knight was something I would prefer forgetting.

Well, I am still looking forward to the day when these Cybertronians will make a return with their magnificent dialogs and cool action stunts. While there’s not much to look forward to, an animated Transformers movie is set for a release in September.

Directed by Josh Cooley, the movie has Michael Bay returning as one of the producers.

As for the plot, it tells the prequel story of the universe as we know it. We get to dig deeper into the youthful days of Optimus Prime and Megatron when they were not going after each others’ necks. The question remains, is it the story that will make fans excited again for the universe again?

Borderlands

Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett

For video game lovers, Borderlands is a treat! Based on the famous video game series of the same name Borderlands is a sci-fi comedy I am looking forward to. Eli Roth, known for his direction for movies like Fin, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Hemlock Grove, and more is taking up the direction part.

Looking at the trailer, the movie looks promising. The graphics look great and the character designs are stunning.

All that combined with stars like Kevin Hart as Roland, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis.

As much as I know about the movie, as someone who has been a longtime fan of Borderlands games, I am excited about its release. However, the trailer has received mixed reactions across social media. While some are praising its graphically promising appeal, others are not so sure with the cast.

Alien: Romulus

Cast: Isabela Merced, Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson

Scheduled for an August 15, 2024 release date, this next addition to the infamous Alien franchise focuses on a group of young interstellar travelers being haunted by a terrifying creature. The IMAX experience that this Fede Álvarez treat will offer can keep both sci-fi and horror fans hooked to their seats.

Álvarez is known for several titles like Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead (2013), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2023), and more. This seventh installment of the Alien series is his next big project expected to shake up the silver screens with box office records and praising critics’ reviews

Honestly, I am a huge IMAX nerd and after watching the trailer, all I am doing is counting the days until tickets are open so I can book the best seat!

And you? Are you going too?

The Electric State

Cast: Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt

The next sci-fi saga of the year brings Millie Bobby Brown on the silver screen once again, this time, along with Chris Pratt. The official adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel is directed by the visionary Russo Brothers.

That’s half of the reason why I am excited for its Netflix release, the other half is my bias towards the novel and the cast!

To give some sprinkle of the plot, the story is focused on a teen girl roaming around with her robot to find her younger brother. Some characters are humans, while others are robots. To unpack the drama that is going on in this mindverse of the Russo brothers, we will have to wait for a while.

The release date is not yet released sadly!

Slingshot

Cast: Casey Affleck, Tomer Capone, Laurence Fishburne

A mission to Saturn is jeopardized and now a stranded astronaut has to struggle between defining reality, and the illusion. Directed by Mikael Håfström, the movie has secured a release date of August 30, 2024.

Along with Cassey Affleck as John the astronaut, Timer Capone of The Boys fame and  Laurence Fishburne are joining the screen. While not many details are released about the movie yet, it sure looks like a fun title to look forward to.

There’s no news on the trailer yet.

The Wild Robot

Cast: Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Mark Hamill

What I am most looking forward to this year is this. Saw its trailer for the first time when I went to watch Kingdom of the Apes in the theatre, since then, I have been constantly waiting for tickets to open. Alas! September is far.

Anyway, The Wild Robot is an animation project of none other than Animator Chris Sanders. The creator of infamous titles such as Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon. Even the cast of the movie is great including Pedro Pascal as the Fox Fink, Lupita Nyong’o as the Robot Roz, and Catherine O’Hara as the possum Pinktail.

The plot follows Roz the Robot stranded on a deserted island after a typhoon causes plenty of lost robots. Throughout this survival adventure, Roz makes new four-legged friends in the native wildlife and explores what goes beyond her Zeroes and Ones!

Honestly, Chris Sanders has a history of slaying when it comes to making our childhoods fun. Even now I am as excited about his work as I was for Lilo and Stitch or for How to Train Your Dragon movies.

So, is there anything specific you are going to look forward to? Or maybe I missed something? Give me a ping and let me know.
