Am I late to the party with my ‘KAOS’ Netflix review?
KAOS, the word itself hums with the promise of disorder, and the show lives up to its name in the most delightful way. Trust me, I’ve glimpsed IMDB’s KAOS Netflix review, but its modest 7.5 doesn’t capture the true essence lurking beneath the surface.
As someone who’s wandered the paths of modern retakes of mythologies, from the dreamlike American Gods to the thunderous Ragnarok, I can tell you this: KAOS is something different. Something… spellbinding.
I won’t dwell on the fade of American Gods (we’ll save that lament for another night), but right now, let’s talk about KAOS, Netflix’s latest creation. If you’ve watched Blood of Zeus, another Greek mythological retelling, then you’ll know Netflix can weave a fine tapestry of gods and mortals.
But where Blood of Zeus danced with tradition, KAOS rips apart the old myths and reimagines them in a world both strange and familiar. It’s an audacious, entirely fictional retelling, and that’s precisely what makes the show an absolute treat!
Jeff Goldblum brought the Gangsta God to the table in KAOS
Goldblum absolutely nailed the role of Zeus. His attempt at the King of Gods is so humane- yet so Godly that I loved each and every word that came out of his mouth. The guy literally showed the dominance, the darkness that fueled Zeus’s ego.
And just as Zeus commands the screen, the costumes demand your attention too.
Let’s talk about everything Gods wore- MAANN Rebecca Hale did such a great job with making these Gods fashionable. Every piece feels like a divine blend of ancient mythology and high fashion. Janet McTeer as Hera exudes regal elegance, and Nabhaan Rizwan as Dionysus looks every bit the unpredictable, whimsical god he’s meant to be. Hale has made the gods not just powerful, but impossibly stylish. KAOS Netflix has redefined how we picture deities, and it’s all in the details.
Simply put, every God on the screen is red-carpet-ready; ready to slay!
How is the KAOS Netflix plot different than other Greek Myth Retellings?
KAOS spins a wild, unpredictable tale where gods and mortals find themselves intertwined in a web of chaos (apologies for the dad joke! 😂).
Prometheus is our narrator. He is revealed as a prisoner of Zeus tormented by the flesh-eating eagle. Being all-powerful that he is, it was the least of his concerns. His major concern was to see that prophecies were fulfilled and Zeus got what he deserved. That’s the tricky part. There are obstacles, twists, and things not as simple as you might have guessed.
Goldblum’s Zeus notices a wrinkle on his face making him all panicked and shi*. The guy loses it over a wrinkle you know. But he is a god- so that’s understandable, it could be a sign to something- something big. You know what folks- turns out he was right, and his panicking, attempt to stop fates is what set things in motion.
Panic-stricken, he begins a desperate search for answers, only to discover that his once-loyal gods are teetering on the edge of rebellion.
Meanwhile, on Earth, mortals struggle with their own divine battles.
While Zeus is spiraling into chaos over a wrinkle, down on Earth, Orpheus, a troubled soul, has his own divine mess to deal with…
Orpheus is not just a musician in this version but someone with a much more dangerous mission. He’s determined to reawaken Riddy, a woman with secrets as deep as the gods themselves. Think of this like Black Morpheus, where Orpheus’s journey into the underworld parallels Riddy’s metaphorical death, as he tries to pull her back to life.
While I liked his character in the starting, absolutely dedicated to his love, and also because his music was great. But after Riddy is gone, his actions in an attempt to bring her back gave some clarity. Clarity on where his priorities lay- it was more of an obsession than love. (Minor spoiler ahead!) The guy kept her coin so she couldn’t go to the Renewal!
Orpheus isn’t just a tragic hero like in other retellings. He’s layered, flawed, and desperate, bringing shades of characters from shows like The Sandman and American Gods. He faces his destiny but questions whether he wants to fulfill it.
The tension simmers with every choice he makes, leaving you constantly wondering: will he succeed, or will he fail spectacularly?
Some things about KAOS will look peculiarly familiar!
If you’ve seen Blood of Zeus, you’ll catch a few familiar nods to Greek myths, but KAOS twists them into something entirely different. Every interaction feels like a game of chess between gods and mortals, where each move could lead to disaster… or redemption. But just as the pieces begin to fall into place, the show leaves you hanging at the brink of divine chaos.
If you’re as curious as I was, you’ll want to see how this mythological madness unfolds. KAOS keeps you guessing and, just when you think you’ve got it all figured out…
well, let’s just say Zeus isn’t the only one with surprises up his sleeve. 😉
