How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Review: ‘Amah, you’re my First Place’- A Loveletter to all Grandmas

For the last few days, while scrolling through Instagram, I was coming across reaction videos of the cinema audience watching ‘How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’. And that planted the desire to watch this movie, and here I am now- with a heart as heavy as the megalodon shark, writing this How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Review.

The movie turned out to be one of the biggest Thai box-office blockbusters of the year. But do not get misguided, as critics’ reviews suggest, it’s not a comedy movie- comedy is just a part of it, it’s a movie that will make you want to cry throughout and beyond.

A Heartfelt Tale of Love, Greed, and Family

Directed by Pat Boonnitipat, the film revolves around a grandson and his grandmother, who start out emotionally distant. After Grandma suffers an injury and is taken to the hospital, it’s discovered that she’s suffering from cancer. This news opens the floodgates of family greed, as relatives circle around her estate, each one eager to secure their slice of the inheritance pie.

One of these members is the grandson ‘M’, who wants to take care of Grandma so well that she will give him her inheritance. As they share more playful, fun, and loving moments with each other, you start to get the hope that maybe there’s a change happening in the grandson’s heart.

And that’s what this movie has delivered flawlessly.

The plot, the premise of How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies navigates through the thin line of love and greed.

Now, throughout the entire runtime, there were tons of moments that are going to remain as a permanent part of my heart and soul- but there’s this line at the end when M says ‘Amah, you’re my First Place’. That broke all the control I had over my tears- I am not ashamed to admit, it made me sob like hell!

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies: A Visual and Emotional Feast

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Review – Emotional scene between grandmother and grandson.

Cinematographically, How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is a real treat. Every frame feels carefully crafted, paired perfectly with a soundtrack that heightens both the light and heavy moments. Boonnitipat’s direction adds authenticity to the narrative, and here’s a little fun fact, he actually moved back in with his 92-year-old grandmother during the production to make the character of Grandma feel as real as possible. That personal touch shows in every scene, making the bond between Tum and his grandmother feel genuine and raw.

According to Deadline, Boonnitipat first got the script from a producer three years ago, but along with screenwriter Thodsapon Thiptinnakorn, he made some significant changes. These changes, infused with his own life experiences, deepened the emotional core of the story. That personal touch is what makes the movie hit so hard, especially when you realize that much of what’s on-screen is rooted in real-life emotions and relationships.
