Warning: This House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 6 recap and review contains major spoilers!
House of the Dragon’s second season has been heavy on dialogue and intricate plotting, with fewer action-packed scenes following the explosive Battle of Rook’s Rest. While some episodes have slowed the pace, House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 6, titled “Smallfolk,” brings a sense of impending danger as we edge closer to the season finale.
Released this Sunday, the episode continued from what episode 5 had left off, Rhanerya and Jace’s search for potential dragon riders hiding out there has ended on a loyal Gold Cloak to the Team Black- Ser Steffon Darklyn. If his face rings a bell, it’s because he once accompanied Rhaenyra on her secret sojourn to King’s Landing.
Bold and brave, Ser Steffon steps up to tame the mighty Seasmoke. Alas, the dragon has other plans. In a cruel twist of fate, Seasmoke incinerates him on the spot.
Ser Steffon got fired before his job began, literally! RIP.
Post this little mischievous stunt, Seasmoke decides to find his rider himself and ends up chasing Addam of Hull, brother of Alyn of Hull.
After this fiery display, Seasmoke decides to find his own rider, chasing down Addam of Hull, brother to Alyn of Hull. Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is wracked with guilt over Ser Steffon’s demise but finds unexpected comfort in Mysaria. Their conversation, laced with hints of Mysaria’s tragic past, leads to a heartfelt embrace—cut short before things get too heated.
Daemon, our ever-tormented prince, is still grappling with his demons. Harrenhal’s black magic has him in its grip, clouding his mind and blunting his strategic acumen. Instead of plotting wars and burning fleets, he’s haunted by visions of his brother Viserys, swinging between confrontations and sorrow.
A rare moment of clarity sees Daemon embrace Viserys in his visions, regaining a sliver of control. His torment nearly costs Ser Simon Strong his life before Daemon decides to flee Harrenhal’s cursed grounds, only to be waylaid and mockingly counseled by Alys River.
Not sure about you, but his saga this season is testing my patience!
The Dowager Queen
In King’s Landing, Alicent has her own battles to fight. Now after losing her claim to rule the kingdom in Aegon’s absence, she is also relieved from the council by Aemond.
But that’s not the worst that had happened to her!
Rhanerya’s gift for the people of King’s Landing sent the capital into chaos. People were fighting for food and the riots got worse when Alicent and Helaena’s bodyguard chopped off the hand of a civilian. Barely they made it out of there alive.
All this chaos and Aemond still blames Rhaenrya for the blockade. On the other hand, this carelessness of Aemond is fueling the fire in her favor.
What’s Next for House of the Dragon?
Seasmoke has chosen his rider, and there’s talk of a wild dragon in the Vale that has Rhaena intrigued. As Ser Crispin Cole and the Lannisters, along with their Western allies, move towards their next battle, the Riverlands are poised for conflict. Will this epic clash unfold in Episode 7 or the season finale? Only time will tell.
Whatever the outcome, we can only hope for a thrilling conclusion that makes the gap between the two seasons worthwhile.
